Barang yang akan dimuat dalam kapal selalu, bila dinyatakan dalam berat, memakai ukuran ton. Namun ukuran 1 ton metrik adala 1.000 kg, 1 ton Inggris adalah 1.016,05 kg, dan 1 ton Amerika adalah 0.90718 metrik. Sehingga perbandingan ketiganya adalah :

Dalam menghitung isi ruangan, bila menerima muatan, dipakai berat (weight) atau ukuran (measurement) yang lebih menguntungkan pihak kapal. Untuk ini digunakan istilah Shipping ton. Satu Shipping ton besarnya 40 cft dan satu Shipping ton metric berarti suatu barang seberat 1.000 kg mengambil ruangan muatan sebesar 1 meter kubik.

Muatan yang stowage factor atau faktor muatnya lebih kecil dari adalah 40 adalah deadweight cargo.

Stowage factor (SF) adalah volume yang diperlukan untuk 1 ton (1.016 kg) barang yang dinyatakan dalam cft. SF 40 berarti bahwa 1 ton barang itu mengambil tempat 40 cft. Dalam SF sudah diperhitungkan pula broken stowage (celah yang terdapat diantara muatan). Sebagai contoh. Sf kopra adalah 80. itu berarti 1 long ton kopra mengambil ruangan 80 cft

Untuk dapat menghitung banyaknya barang yang dapat dimuat dalam salah satu ruangan muatan kapal atau palka, kita harus mengetahui besarnya ruangan palka. Besarnya ruangan palka dari kapal dinyatakan dalam bale space dan grain space

Bale Space adalah ruangan didalam palka yang disediakan untuk muatan umum (general cargo) dan biasanya dinyatakan dalam cft. Besarnya ruangan muatan diukur dari bagian dalam gading – gading dan antara lantai bawah dengan bagian bawah dari deck beam lantai atas.

Grain Space adalah ruangan dalam palka yang disediakan untuk mutan curah (bulk) dan biasanya dinyatakakan dalam cft. Besarnya ruangan muatan diukur dari bagian dalam dinding kapal dan dari lantai bawah sampai dengan bagian bawah dari lantai atas.

Jumlah keseluruhan dari bale space atau grain space dibagi oleh cargo deadweight ton adalah stowage factor dari sebuah kapal barang.

Perbandingan antara net, gross, dan deadweight tonnage berbeda untuk setiap kapal. Khusus bagi kapal-kapal barang, rasio perbandingannya biasanya adalah
